Day 19 - Anhui trip
I'm at the Hong Kong airport waiting for my flight.
Thank God that the past two weeks have been wonderful and fruitful. I find the lyric from the song You raised me up: "I am strong when I am on Your shoulder; You raise me up to more than I can be" sums up the experience.

Outing w/ students at 天井湖, which is right across the hotel we stayed.

A street in Tong Ling we passed every day on the way from hotel to school. The weather was very hot. Sometimes the temperature could go up to 36-37 degree celsius. Instead of walking 10-15 minute one way, we often took a 3-wheeler or a cab.
During class, we lectured, played games, had group discussion, asked students to role-play ...etc. Their attention could easily wander off. See how readily they posted during class.
We moved the students frequently: they might sit in a circle, in an U-shape, in groups, or everyone crowded up in front.
Outdoor game, where I lost my voice!

Picture was taken in front of a government building, at the other end of the lake.
Meeting some old students from 2 years ago in Tong Cheng! What a delightful surprise to see 6 old students bringing 4 new friends. All of them have grown maturer.

College entrance exam in China
It's this week. The picture shows that in Beijing parents accompany their kids to the exam venue and bid them good luck. I wish for my students blessings from the Above.

Song dedication:
Thanks to Pearl, her friend Angus gave me a CD with the Cantonese version of "You Raise Me Up" rendered by 張崇基, 張崇德, 劉美娟. Hearing the song brings back warm-hearted and beautiful memories of my Tong Cheng friends.The Friends of Anhui (安徽之友) are getting ready to fly to Anhui again this year. Regretfully, I won't be going. Still, I wonder how the kids are doing. I wonder about their university entrance exam. I wonder about them ...
Searching through my past blog entries, I'm surprised that I have not once mentioned the song "You raised me up" in any of my Tong Cheng reminiscence. It's one of the songs we taught the kids and many just loved it. Here's the long overdue lyric of the first stanza and the chorus:
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

A thankful heart is a happy heart
[Inspired by "野猪"'s email]
When things are going smoothly, it's easy to be thankful for people and things: family, friends, teachers, school, health, love, friendship, job, church, opportunities, etc.
But when things don't go smoothly or get tough, what can we be thankful for?
- like when i failed my exam
- when i'm separated from my loved ones
- when i come from a broken family
- when a friend has gotten seriously ill
- when a close friend got drowned
- when things don't go my way
Remember Lena Maria, and remember the God that Lena Maria trusts with her life. Be thankful that God's with us. Christians are not immuned from difficulty. God doesn't give us a smooth path, but He gives us strength to get through a difficult road.
Here's one of my favorite quotes from Lamentations 3:22-23--

Good-bye, little fish

in the past, i've quoted from and linked to ablogaday's blog here in Renaissance of Grace.
Come to think of it, I like to write about death. See my other posts: 怕死, music spec. for my big day, and music talk: 彩虹下的約定.
Little fish's obituary
Two lively, little fishes were given to me on July 27, 2006.
One passed away on Friday, August 15, 2006.
The other passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2006.
They're among the many wonderful creations of God. Though short-lived, their mere presence testifies to the wonder of life and the existence of a creator.
As it says in the Bible 《

I received a bookmark, on which 黄庭坚---清平乐(春归何处) is printed. Thanks to google search and many software programs that switch from simplified to traditional Chinese and vice versa, I can learn what it means!
If you are able to read Chinese, check out this external link and let me know whether the interpretation is sound. Many, many thanks la.

Tong Cheng - afterthought 2
Tong Cheng - afterthought
So many memorable things happened during the brief 10 days there -- I don't even know where to begin. And all the friendship sprouted there was so special -- words simply can't capture how I feel. I miss my students!
Our theme song for the English camp is the "True Meaning of Love" (1 Cor 13:4-8) (English or Chinese). I myself learned a great deal about the power of Love. We didn't (or couldn't) preach it with our lips much, but we did plenty with our action. As one student wrote, "Don't underestimate the power of love."
This morning, I remembered these lovely faces and prayed for them. The song "Pass It On" by Kurt Kaiser occurred to me. The lyric expresses exactly my experience with them and my wish for them.

It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That's how it is with God's Love,
Once you've experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.
...
I wish for you my friend
This happiness that I've found;
You can depend on Him
It matters not where you're bound,
I'll shout it from the mountain top!
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.
