University shooting

Northern Illinois campus shooting - 2/14/08 - 5 dead. Suspect is a former sociology student.

Louisiana Technical College shooting - 2/8/08 - 3 dead. A 23-year-old nursing student killed two fellow female students in the classroom at the Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge before turning the gun on herself.

Virginia Tech University shooting - 4/17/07 - 33 dead. Cho Seung-hui was the gunman of this shooting rampage at the engineering building on campus.

Many U.S. college students that I come into contact view their university education a commodity. They judge the credibility, qualification, service, as well as the amount of time and effort they are asked to contribute in return for a good grade. They see themselves owing the right of a consumer and thus have their unique perspective of what "fairness" is. For some of them, putting a certain amount of effort must get them a certain grade. If it doesn't pan out the way they expect, then they blame the professor.

Well, the consumer mentality is really annoying but not intolerable. What's intolerable is the increasingly prevalent campus shooting spree. I'm seriously thinking about teaching little kids private piano lesson for full-time!

I heard the news as well. And it's so sad to hear them on and off...

So, if you make up your mind to teach little kids private lesson or wait and see. I support you, and will pray for you.

I am teaching in CUHK and agree to your views completely. Students are the same all over the world. Luckily, we cannot buy any guns in HK.

Foon, I'll see how God leads. After all, getting the teaching contract is not within my control.

Hi Carol, how's it going? Thanks for your comment. What subject do you teach?

Everyone, have a blessed new (again) year!

We're fine.

I am teaching undergrads and postgrads advertising. Reponses from my students are the same as yours. I taught in Baptist U before and it's no differences. They think they should get A or A- all the time, When I was a student, I only think I was not good enough so I could not get good grades.

We sent your mom a postcard last week.

Thanks for the postcard!

Guess what, the best students that I've encountered are the ones in Anhui, China.
